Global Crisis and European Political Economy (L1998)

Autumn teaching
The European Political Economy has been deeply shaped by crisis. On this module, you’ll explore key themes and debates about:
- the origins and effects of the 2008 global financial crash
- the eurozone crisis
- the contemporary challenges facing Europe’s political economies.
You’ll examine contested origins and impact of these crises, interrogating how political elites have responded to them.
Your focus will include:
- the impact of the crisis in the European periphery
- political systems
- the role of the media.
You’ll also study key theoretical debates on European political economy, austerity, financialisation and neoliberalism.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 30 hours of contact time and about 270 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
