Public Law I: Constitutional and Administrative Law Advanced (M3006)

Autumn teaching
On this module, you’ll explore the nature and structure of the British constitution. You’ll examine its core theoretical principles and how these are applied in the institutions of government.
Through constitutional theory and political practice, you’ll analyse how power is distributed between the legislative, executive and judicial branches. You’ll also consider how far state power is controlled and restrained.
Other topics to explore include:
- the mechanisms used to control the exercise of state power
- the principles of Judicial Review
- alternative mechanisms for holding institutions of the state to account.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 26 hours of contact time and about 124 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
