This talk explores how artificial intelligence can meaningfully support low-resource communities in culturally and ethically grounded ways. Drawing on two real-world case studies from Taiwan—AI-assisted Indigenous language revitalisation and the detection of implicit gender bias in large language models (LLMs)—Dr Yang demonstrates how AI intersects with social science to both preserve underrepresented knowledge and expose structural limitations in model diversity. These cases reveal how AI can rapidly support the documentation of minority data, while also making visible the embedded biases and lack of diversity in current systems. Dr Yang, an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersection of computational and management sciences, advocates for earlier and deeper engagement from social scientists in shaping the direction of AI and embedding social values into its design and governance.
This event is co-hosted by the Centre for Social Work Innovation and Research and the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab.
